Ooana Chasing Bear came to DePauw's International Center for me many times, to speak to the International Students about Native American life. This was as I was serving as their advisor for nearly twenty years. My students were awe-struck by her, and revered her highly. I am a native of Santa Fe, with Native American issues very dear to my heart. Ooana and I shared many conversations. I was amazed by her personal adornments, particularly the turquoise and silver pieces she always had on. She was a walking treasure vault....and her home, with the beautiful pottery, baskets, art. As a New Mexican, I felt very at home in her house. I will always remember her prayer pole, standing in the Indiana morning sunlight. May peace, grace and beauty surround you, above, below, behind, in front, in all the four directions, forever, Chasing Bear!
I had the privilege of sharing a few celebrations with you and your husband during the years. Talking with you was a serene and enlightening conversation. You left a mark on many of us.
Thank you for your example.
