Have some of the best memories digging worms with Tony in the garden and fishing in the lake until it was so dark outside and seeing the light from the summer house with Tony and Ooana and my parents talking until late. Catching fish and turtles and bringing them to them. Miss those times. Good people… still have the painted shirt ooana made for my father. Philip
looked at the photos--was so pleased to see me in one of the photos-I have the photo she gave me one as well--
So sad to hear of the passing of Ooana--I did so love her---I still have the ribbon shirt she made me--many fun times were held by the lake around the fire--Tony was a gentle giant--I spoke with her on the phone a few yrs ago and I still have the last letter she wrote me--take confort in the fact that you were loved Eric---Yuka
Here are the lyrics to my song Prairie In The Sky which I wrote in 1974.
I think Ooana would apprecitate these words!
Prairie In The Sky -
I ride a big blue roan, I carry all I own
In the pouches of my saddle bags, with my bedroll tied behind
There's a prairie in the sky, I'll find it bye and bye
Hills of brown and yellow to make a soul unwind
Let the music take me home to where a heart may roam
I'll fly across the meadow, touch the tall grass as I go
Let the gentle western wind stay with me `til the end
Beside me `till the day is done and the sun has settled low
Leave the ponies to run free, fas as the eye can see
I'd ride the range forever to see them once again
Let the wild flying things soar above me on their wings
And the stars fill up the night sky and the moon light up
the plain
I ride a big blue roan. I carry all I own
In the pouches of my saddle bags, with my bedroll tied behind

Nicole, Your family is in my thoughts. Oowahnah was a special, special woman. I know, too, that you are carrying her curious spirit and warm heart into the world. I wish I could have been there for the service. I miss you, friend. Sending you hugs and continued healing. With love, Sarah P.

Walk in Beauty, Dear Friend.
I remember decades ago when Dan Carpenter wrote a series of articles about Oowahna Chasing Bear and her efforts to make things better for residents of Pine Ridge Reservation. She was collecting clothing and food in trucks and then seeing that the trucks were driven to the reservation. Mr. Carpenter also told us about her visit to the state legislature and how the more juvenile members of the General Assembly made fun of her. She would also appear at public events with a truck to collect donations of food and clothing, again to be driven to the resevation. She was a person of great conviction and great courage, truly a warrior who cared for the people. I am offering my sincerest condolences to her family and friends. I am sure her life will be an inspiration and she will be greatly missed.
Very Sincerely, Janet E. Rash
I only met Mrs. Mauser a couple of times but have always felt that she and her husband were part of our family. My Aunt Ida, Uncle Andy and cousins, Alan and Mike talked about her often and with such fondness, like an elderly Aunt who just could not make the gathering because of distance....We all will miss her.
She was a lovely lady who worked hard for her people. We met her years ago when our daughter collected items for her church service project. The food and clothing was sent to South Dakota when Chasing Bear was collecting truck loads of goods to aid Rosebud and Pine Ridge citizens. I'm sure she's dancing up among the stars and meeting with the ancestors.
I will miss her, I always enjoyed visiting and having long talks with her, always learned something new when talking with her.
Chasing Bear will be missed by all of us at WVCF. For many years she was an instrumental part of our volunteers for the Native Americans within our facility. We truly appreciate the time and energy she devoted at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility. Thank you!!! Sincerely, Superintendent Richard Brown & WVCF Staff
