Obituary of Emmett Thompson

Emmett "Al" Allen Thompson 74, Indianapolis, IN, died July 9, 2013 with his family by his side. He was born to the late Emmett Andrew and Catherine Regina (Mattingly) Thompson on December 30, 1938 in Henryville, IN. Al attended St. Joseph's Grade School and was a 1956 graduate of Ben Davis High School. Al served as a specialist in the United States Army. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Education from Marian College and his Masters of Science in Education from Indiana University. He married Anne M. Traub in 1969 and they have lived in Indianapolis throughout their marriage. Al was grade "A" teacher for over 50 years. He taught many subjects with Art being his specialty. He began his career with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis; 17 years were spent at St. Michael Catholic School. Al then moved on to Indianapolis Public Schools, Butler University, Marian College and St. Mary of the Woods College to finish off his career in the classroom, but he never left his "teaching" life behind. "Mr. T", as he was known by his students, was most proud of his impact on the lives of young people. Al, always partnered with an infectious laugh, remained a helpful influence for all his pupils long past the classroom. It was not possible to return to Al all the blessings he had placed on family, friends and students. An avid IU fan, it was not uncommon to see Al wearing his IU shirt and cheering on the latest game. Al was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife, Anne; children, Melissa Ruble, Angela Schick, Rebecca (Scott) Reynolds; grandchildren, Olivia and Abigail Ruble, Karsten Schick, Mead and Alexandria Reynolds; brother V. Dale Thompson and sister V. Gale Blackwell. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to either the St. Michael Catholic School or St. Christopher Catholic School.
