Obituary of W. Eugene Poland
W. E (Gene) Poland, 77, of Indianapolis died peacefully on April 15, 2013, surrounded by his family. Gene was born on June 5, 1935 to W.E. and Joy (Jennings) Poland and attended Washington High School in Indianapolis. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War as a radio operator.
On October 25, 1957, Gene married his loving wife, the former Mary Catherine McDonald in Indianapolis. He was employed as an electronic technician at Naval Avionics and sold electronic products for RCA and Bendix prior to becoming the proprietor of the 2631 Tavern.
Gene loved sports. He was an avid bowler, golf enthusiast and talented baseball player who once earned an opportunity to tryout with the Indianapolis Indians. He was a huge fan of IU basketball and the Indianapolis Colts. Gene could fix anything and was an accomplished woodworker and craftsman. He was a firm believer that a dog is a man's best friend, had a terrific sense of humor and loved to share stories and jokes with his friends and family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and lived his life to the fullest.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, W.E. and Joy (Jennings) Poland, his wife, Mary C. Poland and his brothers, John and Fred Poland. He is survived by his children, Carl (Robin) Chavis of Cincinnati, Ohio, Brian (Amy) Chavis of Leesburg, Va., Mary Pat Poland of Indianapolis, Cathy (Mark) Oliver of Avon, Ind. and Phil (Barbara) Poland of Williamsburg, Va.; grandchildren, Stefanie and Casey Bell of Indianapolis, Kristen Oliver of Los Angeles, Calif., Tyler Chavis of Highland Heights, Ky., Paul Oliver of Avon, Ind., Cameron, Dana, and Cooper Poland of Williamsburg, Va., Nina & Alfie Chavis of Leesburg, Va., Nick and Ben Crawford of Cincinnati, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Hali Harrison, Kinsey Bell and Chance Pedrazoli of Indianapolis, Ind.; and sisters, JoAnn Jackson of Greenwood, Ind. and Gloria McCauley of Ladoga, Ind.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 20 from 1 pm - 4 pm in Stevens Mortuary, 5520 W. 10th St., Indianapolis.
