Obituary of Robert Horlander

Robert Martin Horlander peacefully passed into eternal life while at home on July 7, 2012. He was born on July 30, 1931 in Jeffersonville, IN where he was raised. A graduate from Jeffersonville High School in 1949, he worked as the office boy for Barry Bingham Sr. at the Louisville Courier Journal. Later, he attended Indiana University until joining the United States Navy. Upon earning his wings, he flew in the United States Marine Corps followed by the Air National Guard. He was a commercial airline pilot for US Airways for 34 years. Bob spent many years involved in Indiana swimming as a timer, judge and announcer at local, state, national, international and NCAA swim meets. He was a large contributor to the construction of the IUPUI natatorium. He will someday be reunited with Carol (Stein) of Louisville, his wife of 55 years and his four children, Cynthia (Joseph Pulizzi), Ellen Challman, Bob Horlander and Barbara Horlander; granddaughters, Ellie Challman and Andrea Pulizzi. He has one surviving brother, James E. Horlander and many nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins and friends. He has joined his father, Fridolin A. Horlander; mother, Millicent (Scott); brothers, Dr. Fridolin S. Horlander and Richard A. Horlander and many friends and comrades. To celebrate his life, visitation will be held from 4-8 pm on Wednesday, July 11 at Stevens Mortuary in Indianapolis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Thursday, July 12 at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Speedway, IN with interment at West Ridge Park Cemetery. Memorial Contributions are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project or St. Christopher Catholic Church. Semper Fi!
