Obituary of Augustus B. Gaines Sr.
Augustus Bryon Gaines, Sr. affectionately called “Gus” 65 years of age, passed away at home on Monday, May 9, 2016.
Gus was born May 19, 1950 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Augustus and Naomi Gaines. He was the second eldest child of 5 children; one preceded him in death, Michael Gaines. Gus was a native of Haughville where he grew up on Tremont Street. Gus was educated in the Indianapolis Public School System where he graduated from Shortridge High School, class of 1968. Upon graduation Gus entered the U.S. Military where he served until he was honorable discharged in 1973.
Gus was married to Ethel McNeill and from that union two beautiful sons were born, Augustus Bryon Gaines, Jr, and Jamarr Gaines. Gus professed his life to Christ at an early age, and was a visiting member of churches within the community where he lived.
Gus worked many years for Naval Avionics, where he spent two years in Guam as a service technician. He also worked at Indiana Bell well over a decade as a systems technician. Ultimately, Gus retired from the Veterans Administration in 2014.
Gus was a people person and he found joy in helping others. He had the most generous heart when it came to helping those in need. Gus was an attentive father, son, brother, husband and friend. He served the elderly, he tended to the shut-in, and he frequented food pantries to feed the hungry. He was especially attentive to his mother-in-law, Mattie Wyatt, they adored each other. He was also a loving and giving father to his sons. Gus, was also a 70s kind of guy. He loved old school music and you would see him colorfully dressed sporting his butterfly collars. He was a collector of the most unusual items and would be convinced somebody could use them.
Gus made his earthly transition from labor to reward on May 9, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, and youngest brother. He leaves to cherish his memory two sons; Augustus Bryon Gaines, Jr. and Jamarr Gaines; two sisters, Deborah Gaines, Danelle Gaines, and one brother, Edmond Gaines; and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
