Obituary of Thomas Mervar
Thomas "Tom" Mervar
70, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 10, 2015. He was born on September 16, 1944 in Indianapolis to Albert and Emily Mervar. He attended Holy Trinity Catholic School, Cathedral High School, Butler and graduated from Indiana University. Tom also served in the United States Army. Tom spent most of his professional career as a stock broker, most recently with David A. Noyes.
Tom was a lover of life and people, a stranger to no one with a kind and generous spirit. Many years ago, his daughters noticed that he wasn't wearing a coat during a winter cold snap. They asked him why he wasn't and he replied "I saw a homeless man who was out in the cold and gave him mine." He went the rest of the winter without one so that stranger could stay warm, that's just how he was. His passions in life were spending time with family, friends and playing golf.
His skills as an athlete were well documented. His passion for playing, watching and discussing all things related to sports were well known among friends and family. According to life-long friend Joe Dezelan Jr- "Tom Mervar, pound for pound, was one of the toughest athletes to play for Cathedral in the late 50's and early 60's. Tom excelled in football (running back) and track (sprinter) while in high school and went on to earn a scholarship to Butler where he played football for Tony Hinkle for two years. Tom was an avid golfer on the municipal courses in the city. Tom loved to tell people he was a scratch handicap golfer....on the driving range where he always hit the straight and long." His interception return for a touchdown against Washington was a key play in securing the 1961 City Championship.
Tom is survived by daughters, Kelly Mervar Jenkins (Jon), Kristi Mervar, grandson Graham Jenkins; brother Larry Mervar (Robin), step-mother Josephine Mervar, step-brother Michael Kuehn (Karen), special friend Vicki Buchanan and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
