Dad and I did some fishing together over the years, but perhaps my favorite story about fishing is when we were on a charter boat in Lake Erie with four other men, and Dad brought along his fly rod to fish for Walleye. It was a rather choppy day on the water. We all had decent success. But Dad caught the most fish and the biggest fish - all on that fly rod! The captain of the boat was very impressed. Way to go, Daddy!
My condolences to the Ewing family, my thoughts and prayers are with you.
With the deepest sympathy to the entire Ewing family, a tree has been planted in Isreal in John's honor.
May God be with you and your family, John, at this very sad time!
I remember growing up when Grandpa would babysit me he would let me go outside and play in his wood barn. I would always want to climb up to the top and look out the window, but I was scared to climb the ladder and then turn around and climb onto the platform. Grandpa would always stand below me and help me transition from the ladder to the platform to make sure I stayed safe and then he'd let me play up there for hours. The barn was full of nothing but wood, but I wouldn't expect it to be any other way knowing my grandpa's passion for woodworking.
Dad had a few run-ins with fencing, each time resulting in a humorous story and an example of his patience and abilty to take things in stride. One time he and his older brother Calvin cut down a good-sized maple tree while helping to clear my lot, and it fell right on the neighbor's chainlink fence. He and Cal rebuilt that fence and made it look better than new. All this before we even knew about it. All he said was "well, we had to build ya a new fence".
Another time, years later, he spread some ashes from his firepit in his garden, which just happened to be next to his privacy fence. A few hours later his neighbor came over to tell him his fence was on fire. Dad began telling us this story by simply saying " well, I burned up my fence."
I remember sharing fathers day and the Fourth of July parties. We enjoyed at all the crazy croquet games and corn hole tournaments. The funniest story of the bottle rocket chasing you every where you turned one year. No one was hurt, but we laughed until we cried! We will always remember the great times we shared.
I remember when I woke up after having my son, John Mitchell Ewing, and first thing I saw was a dozen red roses with a card saying.... Thank you for giving me a grandson with the Ewing name! I felt so special! And you always treated me like your own child! I Love you!
We enjoyed all the parties we shared over the years. You were a wonderful and kind man, and will be missed greatly.
We Love You and will miss you very much! You were the greatest father in law I could ask for!
