Obituary of Elizabeth Gibboney

Elizabeth Jane Gibboney (1926-2012) of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully in the hospice unit of Methodist Hospital on the early morning of April 3rd. Her death was due to unexpected and brief complications of a brain tumor. She was born, Elizabeth Jane Tanoury in New Lexington, Ohio, to John and Lena Tanoury. One of eight children, Elizabeth was the last survivor. She attended St. Thomas High School in Zanesville, Ohio and received her Bachelor of Science degree at St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus, Ohio. She worked as a laboratory technician at Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville and married the boy next door, Charles Lewis Gibboney, in 1951. After marriage, she and Charles moved to Cambridge, Ohio and raised their six children, David Gibboney(Tracy) of Whitestown, Indiana, Mary Gibboney (Jim Mitchell) of Newark, California, Lynn Gibboney(Jeff Cook) of Carmel, Indiana, Charles Gibboney of Columbus, Ohio, Jim Gibboney (Paul Blanchard) of San Francisco, California and Thomas Gibboney of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth and her large family then moved to Indianapolis in 1965 and settled on the west side of the city in Chapel Hill. No longer working as a laboratory technician, she devoted herself to her family and volunteered with numerous organizations such as the Ronald McDonald House, St Vincent De Paul Society, Indianapolis Symphony and the Northwest Manor Nursing Home. She also worked as a substitute teacher and served as an Alumni Ambassador of St. Mary of the Springs College. A vibrant, energetic and beautiful woman, Elizabeth enjoyed many types of sports, both as a spectator and participant. She played golf, bowling and bridge regularly and followed the Indianapolis Colts and Pacers loyally. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, her six children and five grandchildren, Sarah Cook, Adam Cook, Julia Mitchell, Ben Mitchell, and Eli Gibboney. Elizabeth Jane Gibboney was a fierce opponent of enemies and protector of those she loved. Visitations will be Friday, April 6th from 5-8pm with funeral services 11:30am Saturday, April 7th at Stevens Mortuary& Family Center, 5520 West 10th Street, Indianapolis, IN. Interment Service will follow at West Ridge Park Cemetery Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House or the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
