He was born in Aspen Hill, Tennessee on September 6, 1932. Hume was the eldest son of four children born to the late Hume Nelson Sr. and Ruby Mae Nelson Bell. He was married to Alene D. Waters Nelson for 47 years, who preceded him in death in July 2007. He is survived by his seven children, Barry Nelson, Debra Nelson, Maria (Paul) Carey, Natalie (Mark) Austin, Paul (Donna) Nelson, Christina Lopez, and Hume (Nicole) Nelson III. He is also survived by his twelve grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Hume completed his elementary education in Giles County Tennessee and is a veteran of the Korean War. He was also an active member of Trinity C.M.E. church where he served as a steward for many years.
During the late 1950s and early 1960s, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to create several thriving small businesses, including:
Personal Cab Service - Hume was the original Uber driver
Hume had several interests. He was an avid baseball fan. As a young man he played in one of the Negro Baseball Leagues. Additionally, he loved to fish and spend time with his family. But one of the things he was best known for was his storytelling. His stories were always unique, unforgettable, and infectiously funny. Hume had many sayings that his family lovingly refers to as Hume-isms. Some of these Hume-isms include:
I aint fattening no frogs for no snakes
Everybody has a role
I aint got no nickel in that quarter
Heres a little something to keep the Hanks off you
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27
