Obituary of Walter Meehan

Walter Clarence Meehan, 86, of Indianapolis, passed away on Tuesday, November 23, 2010. He was born on December 5, 1923 in Portland, Indiana to the late Lawrence R. and Belle Lamburn Meehan. Walt was raised on the family farm and graduated from Portland High School in 1941. He served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. On October 26, 1944 during the Leyte campaign Private Meehan, as a member of a volunteer unit, moved forward under enemy fire to rescue approximately 47 wounded men. Walt was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism for actions that saved many lives. On April 27, 1944 he himself was wounded in combat during the Battle of Okinawa and was awarded the Purple Heart. Walt returned home after the War and began classes at Purdue University. In February 1950 He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. While a student at Purdue he met the love of his life, Dorothy Bousum. Walt and Dorothy were married on January 31, 1948 and were to remain life-long partners for more than 56 years until Dot?s death in 2004. In 1957 Walt began his thirty-year career at the Indianapolis Water Company. Although he would retire as Vice President and Director of Operations in 1986, his strong association with his many close fellow employees continued throughout his life. Five of Walt?s descendents would eventually enjoy the experience of working for Walt?s beloved Water Company. Walt is survived by his loving family: sons, Steve (Becky) and Mike (Alicia); grandsons, John (Beth), Kyle (Jodi), Phil, Dan (Harriet) and Sam Meehan; great grandchildren, Nicholas, Sean, Malory, Madeline, Isis, Lily, Eva and Violet. Walt often said that his family and friends were his most cherished possessions in life. He is survived also by his brother George Meehan and sisters Lucille (Fred) Pieper and Martha Miller. He was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 26, 2010 at Stevens Mortuary, 5520 W. 10th Street, Indianapolis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday November 27. 2010 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 7243 East 10th Street, Indianapolis with Rev. Paul Koetter officiating. Walt was a member of St. Monica parish for more than 50 years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Monica School. www.stevensmortuary.net
