Obituary of Zelma Johnson

Zelma Mae Johnson 94, passed away at home this Saturday. Zelma was born in Evansville, Indiana on December 22, 1915, but later, moved to Detroit, Michigan. She retired from General Motors where she worked as a secretary for 31 years. Zelma was a strong willed woman who was born ahead of her time. At many times in her life she worked two jobs. She adopted a son when it was unheard of for a single woman to be allowed to adopt. She bought a home in 1958 when home loans were not given to single women. Zelma was witty and intelligent. She read voraciously and wrote poems in her spare time. After her retirement, she traveled at least once a year. She devoted most of her time to her family and her cat, Misty. She moved to Indianapolis in 2004 and spent the last six years with her son Lowell, and his wife Peggy. Zelma was very outgoing and had no trouble striking up a conversation with the people around her. She made many friends here in the Indianapolis area. Zelma is survived by her son, Lowell Johnson; four granddaughters, Kimberly Hendrickson, Wendy Grumley, Toni Hiers and Deanna Banker. She also has four great grandchildren, Colin, Kerra, Lilly and Fionna. An informal service (more like a celebration) will be held this Wednesday, September 22 at Stevens Mortuary & Family Center, 5520 W. 10th Street, Indianapolis, and Zelma's family would like to invite her friends to join them anytime from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. She will be transported to White Chapel Cemetery in Troy, Michigan where she will be buried with her mother and father. Services will be held there with the rest of her family and friends. www.stevensmortuary.net
