Obituary of Paul Bither

Dr. Paul P. Bither, age 57, died on February 1, 2012, after a noble battle with esophageal cancer. Paul was born in Houlton, Maine, and moved to Indianapolis in 1981 where he lived for the remainder of his life. He completed his undergraduate studies at Colby College and his graduate studies at the New England College of Optometry. After receiving his optometry degree, he completed a one year residency in low vision rehabilitation in West Haven, Connecticut. He was a member of the clinical faculty at the Indiana University School of Optometry for seven years before starting his private practice in 1988 for low vision care. Paul was a member of the American and Indiana Optometric Associations, the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER), and the Indiana Low Vision Rehabilitation Society. He also served as a consultant for the Indiana School for the Blind, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, and the VA Medical Center. In 2011, he was awarded ?Outstanding Professional of the Year? by the AER. Paul was also a member of John Wesley Free Methodist Church for 30 years, faithfully serving in ministry and filling up the tenor section of the choir. Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Carol; his two children, Brian and Amy; his sister Marie, and his brother Dean. He was preceded in death by his parents, Preston and Christie Bither, and his brother Scott. Visitation will be Friday, February 10 from 4 pm to 8 pm at John Wesley Free Methodist Church, 5900 West 46th Street, Indianapolis, 46254. Funeral services will also be held at the church on Saturday, February 11 at 12:00 pm, with an additional viewing at 11:00 am. Memorial contributions may be made to John Wesley Free Methodist Church and the IU Simon Cancer Center in his honor.
