Obituary of Herman Greenwood
Herman Edward Greenwood, 77, of Speedway, IN passed away on July 24th, 2019. Herman was born in Indianapolis on July 21, 1942, to Herman Otto and Kathlyne Greenwood, both of whom preceded him in death.
Lifelong resident of Speedway, Herman attended Saint Christopher Grade School, Speedway Jr. High, and Speedway High School. He went on to attend Indiana University in Bloomington where he was a member of the Catholic Neuman Club—where he met his future wife, Yolanda. He participated in Speedway High School’s Marching Band and performed with the Indiana University “Marching Hundred”.
Upon graduation from Indiana University, Herman returned to Speedway where he opened a law practice that continued for fifty years. Always believing in the importance of giving back to the community, he joined Optimist Club International in 1969 and served as President, Lt. Governor, Secretary Treasurer, and Governor of the South District throughout his membership. Herman was a long-time Democratic Ward Chairman and Precinct Committee Person for Wayne Township.
Volleyball was Herman’s passion. He recruited, managed, coached, played the sport, and always looked forward to attending the National Senior Games, or “Senior Olympics”. He also greatly enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a devoted husband of 53 years, father and grandfather. Few things brought him as much delight as the time he spent with his grandchildren.
Herman is survived by his wife, Yolanda Greenwood; his three sons, Matthew (Nonkululeko), Mark (Brooke), and Jason (Stephania) Greenwood; his daughter, Deanna (David) Garner; and 4 grandchildren: Bella, Emma, Dennis, and Jayce.
The family would like to thank Dr. Farag and his staff at the IU Health Simon Cancer Center and the doctors and staff on the Progressive Care and Hospice floor of the IU Health University Hospital for the care and thoughtfulness they gave Herman and his family.
Visitation will be 10:00 am on Saturday, August 17th at St. Christopher Church, 5301 W 16th St, Indianapolis, IN 46224. A Catholic Mass will follow at 11:00 am.
