Obituary of Maria Regina Osborne
On the evening of April 3, 2019 Regina Osborne of Indianapolis passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones at the age of 93. Regina was born Maria Regina Regis de Alencastro on July 3, 1925 to parents Tito and Adelina Regis de Alencastro in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. The youngest of 7 siblings and a daughter of a general in the Brasilian army, Regina attended Notre Dame de Sion private school for girls in Petropolis, Brasil. She served as valedictorian of her class. Regina attended the University of Brasil and earned a degree in Library Science.
In 1946 she moved to the United States where she met John Samuel Osborne, a native of Indianapolis and they were married in April of 1948. She and John became parents to nine children and resided in Eagledale and later in Eagle Creek…both in the Indianapolis area. They were members of St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
Regina was retired from the Indianapolis downtown L.S. Ayres department store where she worked in various areas but her favorite was the book department. Her love of books is proudly displayed in her bedroom where an entire wall of bookcases is dedicated to hundreds of titles.
In her spare time as a mom, a part-time worker at Ayres and in retirement, Regina loved to watch television and had a special affinity for crime, mysteries and zombie shows. She also loved horror movies. She was an avid fan of Jeopardy and loved to do logic problems, jigsaw puzzles, read books, and play games on the computer. Regina was a big fan of the music group Abba. Regina was a trooper when it came to camping on the annual summer family vacations while the kids were growing up and enjoyed her time at her beachside condo in Daytona Beach, Florida in her later years. Regina also served as an interpreter for the Brasilian athletes at the 1987 Pan Am Games held in Indianapolis, as she was fluent in Portuguese.
Regina is survived by her 7 children, Patty (Jim), Steve (Yvonne), Dave (Jan), John (Jenny), Kathy (Rickey), Jeanne, Jane (John), 15 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 4 step-great grandchildren, niece Eliana, and many relatives in Brasil.
Regina was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, beloved husband John, daughters Susan (Pat) and Karen (Chris), son-in-law Tony (Jeanne) and sister-in-law Elza.
Visitation will be at Steven’s Mortuary on 10th Street in Speedway, Indiana on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 from 4p-8p with a prayer vigil at 7:30pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 11 at 12 noon at St. Michael’s the Archangel Catholic Church in Indianapolis. Interment will be at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery at Keystone at the Crossing in the mausoleum’s chapel along side her husband John.
