Sylvia was such a beautiful soul. After my mother's sister, Peg Mattingly Gormley, passed away, my uncle, Joe Gormley, called Mom to tell her about Sylvia and that they would be married. I'm sure Uncle Joe was concerned about his first wife's family being a little upset. But, the first time my mom met Sylvia we all knew she had found not only a new sister-in-law, but a new friend as well. Sylvia stepped right into the hearts of our Mattingly/Hartrich family and we are saddened by the news of her passing. She was always kind, gracious, loving, generous and warm to all of us, her newly adopted nieces and nephews. Sympathy to all of 'us', the families she knit together as one.
She was such a sweet lady-yes you were blessed with two Mothers. Lovely tribute to Sylvia. Heartfelt sympathy and peace and healing to you all-she will be sorely missed.
Such a kind, inquisitive, and devoted person. She will be missed by so many people.
Sending our condolences from IL. I was so very young when my Aunt Peg (Joe's first wife) passed. Sylvia was the only Great Aunt I ever knew then in that branch of my family. My Grandmother (Pegs sister) just loved her so... like another sister in-law. I always looked forward to their IL visits. She always had a hug and a smile. She stayed in touch with my Grandmother even after the yrs passed and age and failing health prevented travelling for family get togethers. Sylvia was a gem! Sending love to all.
This is such a true and beautifully written tribute. I am having a hard time coming to terms with this loss. Because the world needed Sylvia. Still does! Sylvia I love you and miss you and Kim and I wish we had many more road trips and brunches together. The Sparks family, Aunt Sherry, Aunt Jody, thank you for this beautifully put celebration of one of the world’s loveliest souls.
Sherry and Jody I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother she sounds like an amazing woman .
School #67 had our Sylvia!! She was a darling music teacher that I thought the world of. She had so much enthusiasm and wanted her students to love music. She had her cute ways of helping us to remember composers and to"listen" to music to appreciate. My regret is I never was able to tell her how much I appreciated her. God be with her family at this time.
Prayers & thoughts to the family of Sylvia Gormley. She is now with her Love. Maybe they will see my Love, Bill Sowers. Every patient needs a Sylvia to comfort them and coo over their twin daughters and third baby girl. The Sowers family Bill, Billie, Tonya, Tonda & Michalin, say thank you for sharing your Sylvia with our family for many years.
I was one of Miss Sparks students in the 50’s at PS 67. I ADORED Miss Sparks - thought she was beautiful! I loved reading ( and remembering) how she taught us to remember the great composers and their songs...”in the halls of the mountain king, the mountain king, the mountain king.... to this day and over the past 60+ years that memory of those songs has crept into my thoughts!! As students we grow up and wonder about certain teachers at times... so very sorry to have to read about her passing.
I was a patient of Dr Gormley from a toddler until he retired. My son Shawn was Dr G’s patient as well. The best part of our doctor visits was getting to see Sylvia. She was such a wonderful and caring person! Her family was so lucky to have her.
