Obituary of Delores Thoma

Delores A. Quellhorst-Thoma, age 86, quietly joined the angels in heaven on Dec. 23, 2011. Dee, as she was affectionately called, was born in Tipton, Indiana on April 22, 1925 to Ray and Nellie Quellhorst. Dee was baptized, made her first communion and was confirmed at Tipton?s St. John?s Catholic Church. In 1935 Dee and her family relocated from their Tipton farm to Lebanon, Indiana. Never one to sit still, Dee began working as a car hop at age 13. During WWII Dee worked for Lukas-Harold Co. (Naval Air Warfare Center) in Indianapolis as a Norden bomb-site machinist. When Dee?s brother Ray (Bud) returned to his San Diego, California Navy base in 1944, Dee tagged along and because of her petite size quickly found employment at the Ryan Aeronautical Company crawling inside airplane wings to install rivets ? a real life ?Rosie the Riveter.? As WWII drew to an end, Dee returned to Indianapolis where she went to work at Lane Bryant, working in both the personnel and payroll departments. Always in search of new opportunities, Dee joined Indiana National Bank (INB) where she helped implement the banks first computer system and provided training and technology consultation to INB as well as other local banks. In 1963 Dee was the third women to be named an officer of INB. Dee retired from INB in 1974 and almost immediately went to work as a memorial counselor for the Archdiocese Catholic Cemeteries Association. Dee met Bob Thoma and they were married in 1980. Following Bob?s death in 2001 Dee?s interest in charitable work kicked into high gear and she cheerfully, generously and anonymously shared her time, talent, and assets. Dee was often found helping with a variety of activities at St. Christopher Catholic Church such as, providing sandwiches to the homeless and quietly engaged in numerous other selfless acts of charity. Dee enjoyed life; cherished her friends; didn?t have much good to say about politicians; thought people should always take responsibility for their actions; and preferred reading to watching the ?trash? on TV. Dee liked surf and turf; an occasional martini; being called ?Aunt Dee;? and the music of St. Christopher?s Choir. Dee?s life-long love of music included dancing as well as the diligence to become a self-taught pianist. Dee was preceded in death by her husband Bob, and sisters Bernice and Martha. Survivors include brothers Ray and Jim; sisters Mary Wiley, Madonna (Benny) Campbell and Jeanette (Gerald) Padgett; and Godchildren Kathleen Huffman, Beverly Howson, Thomas Quellhorst, and James Quellhorst. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at St. Christopher Catholic Church from 10:00 to 11:00am on January 10, 2012. Beginning about 11:15am, Dee?s life will be celebrated during a Eucharistic Mass followed by an internment service at Clayton Cemetery, County Road 0, Hendricks County, Clayton, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to the Saint Christopher Youth Endowment which Dee proudly founded and funded. Saint Christopher Catholic Church is located at 5301 W. 16th Street, Speedway, Indiana 46224. Dee peacefully passed away with a smile knowing that she would always be loved and fondly remembered. Arrangements entrusted to Stevens Mortuary and Family Center. www.stevensmortuary.net
