After graduating from high school, she spent the summer of 1958 as a camp cook at Camp Potawotami in northern Indiana. She graduated from Porter Business School in 1959 and was hired at Blue Cross Blue Shield in 1959 where she worked until the end of 1966 when her first child was adopted, a second child was adopted in 1969.
