Obituary of James Lekse

James Gerald Lekse, husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle we loved so deeply, age 67, of Indianapolis, passed away February 7, 2010, after a long battle with cancer. He was born January 18, 1943 in Indianapolis, the son of Jacob and Sophia (Konechnik) Lekse. He married Kathryn L. (Kinnick) Lekse on February 20, 1981. Jim was a 1961 graduate of Cathedral High School. He had a long and distinguished career in law enforcement beginning with the Marion County Sherrif's Department. Jim served twenty-five years with the Speedway Police Department, retiring in 1991 as assistant chief. He was also Chief of Police at Marian University for ten years, retiring in 2003. Jim was a member of the Slovenian National Home, KSKJ and St. Christopher Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Lekse; son, James Allen (Heather) Lekse, of Indianapolis; daughter, Katie (Josh) Reynolds, of Brownsburg; two brothers, Dave Lekse, of Cloverdale, IN and Mike (Bev) Lekse of Clarkston, MI; and one sister, Diane (Sal) Pella, of Alpharetta, GA. He was the beloved grandfather of Tyler Lekse and Parker Reynolds. In addition, he is survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Sonny. Visitation will be held at Stevens Mortuary & Family Center, 5520 W 10th St, Indpls, on February 11, 2010 from 3-7:30 pm, with the recitation of the Rosary at 7:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Christopher Catholic Church, 5301 W 16th St, Indpls, at 10:30 am on Friday, February 12, 2010. Father Michael Welch will be the main celebrant. Entombment will be at Calvary Cemetery. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to any of the following in Jim's name: St. Christopher Catholic Church, Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, IN or The Ruth Lilly Hospice of Clarian.
